There are so many options with concerns to match when hiring a Disc Jockey for your social of corporate function. Professionalism, reliability, repertoire and equipment top the list of concerns.

If you don’t have a referral from  a reliable source, goingto the internet and “Google-ing” chicago disc jockey will give you a list of dj’s in the area but how do you narrow those down. Are they the most reliable just because they have a flashy website?

Here are a few tips for hiring a disc jockey and helping you find the right person for your event.

  1. Start with a referral from your venue. Most hotels, private venues and country clubs have a list of vendors and suppliers that have worked in the venue and have done  a good job.
  2. Ask the dj or dj service how many years they have been performing.  Ask for referrals from past clients.
  3. Talk to your dj about your event and ask what type of music he or she would anticipate playing during the event. If it is a social event for a 50th wedding anniversary and the dj doesn’t know swing music or the likes, it could be a red flag.
  4. Find out how many music selections they carry with them and on what format. PM Productions uses dj’s that carry cds, Ipods and a hard drive of music with just about every song imaginable from the 1950’s through today. Most requests are met.
  5. Inquire about the dj’s equipment. Type and size of speakers, amps, back up equipment, lighting systems, back up dj if neccessary and emergency phone numbers incase of a no-show.
  6. Ask how he or she handles requests. If the answers is “I’ll play it if I have it”; you might want to consider another dj. Especially with the explicted language in today’s music you want to make sure the dj knows how you feel about certain styles of songs and whether you feel it is appropriate or not.
  7. Once contracted, give your dj a list of songs you feel would be good for your group. Give him the latitude to use the list as he feels fit. If your guests aren’t dancing to a list of Motown songs you provided, it is his or her job to find music that will keep the dance floor filled.

Most professional and experience disc jockeys should be able to handle any type of event from weddings, birthday parties or corporate events. It is their job to play music that will satisfy all age groups and keep guests on the dance floor. Once your dj is on site, let him or her take over and enjoy your event.
